Achievements outside of Media: Communication & Production

Exposure

In April of 2011, I was given the opportunity to take a work placement working with the council and youth workers at a media hub next to The Northern Echo. Here, we were given the task of creating a news show; what kind of news show was entirely up to us.
To begin, a name needed to be chosen, but we didn't want to be too boring by choosing something such "Teen News", for example... and so I decided that a name with connotations would be best - that was when "Exposure" was decided, because the connotations behind this would be things such as 'revealed secrets', or 'power to expose something'. Then, because our target audience was for those around the age of 10-15, we chose to give our show a comedic twist, by writing jokes and sarcastic comments in the script. Me and my co-presenters also employed Italian American accents in order to give the show more colour. Once we got started, the show made quick progress as myself and the rest of the team wrote the script, and our outside reporter interviewed the public about their views on the current news affairs. Had accomplished all of this within the first two days of placement, and - much to the surprise of our boss - we had managed to complete a second episode of the show. Then, because we had so quickly exceeding expectations, we were given the opportunity to continue going to the media hub to produce further episodes of our show. These videos were uploaded to The Northern Echo website and to Youtube.

Eventually, the word began to spread about Exposure, and soon, the Exposure team starting getting requests from the council to make videos about teen pregnancy and opening bank accounts so that awareness could be raised. The fire department also contacted us, asking if we could make a video on firework safety. We were even given the opportunity to interview Duncan Bannatyne.
However, as more requests came through, things got increasingly stressful for the team, and many of the members starting dropping out, until there were only three of us left; myself included.
Because things got too difficult for just the three of us, we had to leave the show to pursue more important concerns such as GCSE's.
